The book of Jonah is not primarily a story about a man and a fish; it's a story about the unstoppable mercy of God toward the nations. Called to preach judgment to Israel's fiercest enemy, Jonah flees, is swallowed up and taken into the depths. He emerges on the third day to accomplish the very mission he dreaded: the repentance of Nineveh. In this, Jonah foreshadows the greater Prophet who descended into death and rose again, whose resurrection unleashes the gospel to every people under heaven.
