BAPTISM & MEMBERSHIP

At Renfrew Baptist Church, we practice believer's baptism — the immersion of those who have personally trusted in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

Baptism is not merely a ceremony or tradition. It is a covenant sign instituted by Christ Himself (Matthew 28:19), publicly testifying to what God has already accomplished in a believer's life: union with Christ in His death and resurrection, forgiveness of sins, and the gift of the Holy Spirit (Romans 6:3–4; Galatians 3:26–27). When someone goes into the waters and rises again, they are enacting the gospel in bodily form — declaring that they have died to their old life and been raised to walk in the newness of life that the Lord gives us.

We baptize believers rather than infants because the New Testament consistently presents faith as preceding baptism, and because the church is, by its very nature, a community of those who have come to know the Lord (Jeremiah 31:33–34; Acts 2:38–41). Baptism testifies to new covenant realities — regeneration, forgiveness, the Spirit's indwelling — that only a believer can claim.

Baptism and church membership belong together. Membership at Renfrew is open to those who have professed faith in Christ, have been baptized as believers, and are committed to walking with God's people in worship, prayer, and mutual accountability. If you have come to faith in Christ and are considering baptism or membership, we would love to talk with you.
